Club runs Tuesdays

  • Normally have a run from the Waltham Forest Town Hall gates leaving at 19:15 and ending up at the club night meeting for 21:00

We generally ride up to Chingford and then do loops of a 4-mile circuit which is mostly street lit (but you will still need lights). Mostly sticking together, but there's one short sharp climb for those inclined to race up it.

    No lights, no ride

A degree of road sense and safety is essential.

These are social rides first and foremost and we endeavour not to leave anyone behind. However the quick ones tend to push it up to 17 mph and make it into a bit of a training ride. As the weather improves the less sprightly of us might even venture out :)

You can help us by listening to the lead rider's guidance, opening brief and following instructions.

Please bring with you enough water and food to get you through the day, and spare inner tubes, pump, waterproof top if it's likely to rain and sun cream when it doesn't.

Open to all ages from 14 upwards. Under 16's may require the attendance of a parent/guardian. Under 18's must wear a helmet.

  • These should be starting up again next week (pre-pub). While we still have another month or so left of light evenings, we'll probably make the most of it and head up to Epping Forest and get a bit of climbing in. This time last year we had a few goes of a route that was about 25 miles, up through Chingford to the forest via a descent of Daws Hill and a climb of Lippits, then either through Upshire or down to Theydon Bois and back via Abridge and Chigwell.

  • Tues 12th August: sunset is at 8.29pm. Here's a 24-mile route, starting and finishing at the Town Hall on Forest Road. There will be three climbs: Mott Street and Claypit Hill in Epping Forest and then Kings Head Hill in Chingford on the way back. The stronger riders will probably race each other up these, but we should regroup after each one.

Next week (Tues 19th August) is pub night and the sun is setting earlier (8.15pm) so I've planned a shorter route (about 20 miles) which finishes at the Hare & Hounds: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5626209

  • Going to give my knee a chance to recover this week and then I'm on holiday, so see you in two weeks!

  • @JamieF you afraid of the dark? people have lights...

  • There's being seen and there's being able to see! Streetlit urban road with bike lights = OK, potholed, debris-strewn, steep descending narrow country lane in Epping Forest in darkness = the stuff of nightmares

  • Still a bit of daylight left for now, so we'll be heading up to Epping Forest again while it's still possible. Meet at 7.15pm at the Town Hall on Forest Road, then we've got this route which will feature a couple of climbs for those who want to push it (Mott Street and Claypit Hill) before finishing at the Hare & Hounds pub on the Lea Bridge Road where there will be a club night for the rest of the evening:

Remember: even though it will be light when we meet, it's going to get dark so you'll need lights

  • The weather forecast suggests there's a shower or two on the way around 4.00-6.00pm. Let's hope that's accurate this time, rather than the unforeseen otherworldy 30-minute downpour that wrecked last week's ride.

  • Just remember a waterproof phone case and you are fine... unlike last week.

  • Yeah I have seen that light reviewed and it actually gets great reviews for the cost of it... Not sure it would have stood up to the deluge we got last week though.

  • Yeah I've never used it in a proper downpour (Ride 89 style) but it's survived hours of miserable drizzle!

  • This is our usual route for the Tuesday evening rides now that it's dark enough to need street lights: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5871646

We use an anti-clockwise loop which starts and finishes at the top of Friday Hill in Chingford. We normally manage three laps of this, with some sprinting up the twin 'peaks' of Sunset Avenue and College Gardens.

  • What's the pace like on Tuesdays ?

  • Hi Martin. It's difficult to say. If you look at the average speed of the Tuesday evening rides, it's really nothing special - my computer says just 14.5mph for the last one. But obviously we get slowed down a bit by junctions and traffic as it's an urban route - it doesn't feel as slow as that! Once up in Chingford we go on a loop of about 4 miles - there are two climbs in quick succession and people tend to push it hard up those and we all get split up, but normally we stop to regroup before embarking on another lap.

  • I think* the Tuesday evening rides died a death over the last few months as more and more people switched to the cheap Wednesday evening at the velopark and got a chaingang going there. However, as a one-off tonight there is a Wednesday evening ride doing loops in Chingford, but trying out a new loop instead: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7422295

Meet at the town hall on Forest Road at 7.15pm.

*I don't know as I haven't been able to go out on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening for ages, so I'm just going on what other people seem to be doing
