The 'tourist trial' (named after a former member of the club) is always the most difficult event on our calendar to explain. The winner could easily be the slowest rider taking part - basically you are given a route and a target time in which to complete it and whoever finishes closest to their target time wins.
In a break with tradition, this year the routes are available in advance (so no messing around with OS maps and pencils). I've tried to cater for everyone so there are four separate routes available: the longer the route, the faster you are expected to ride it (details below), ranging from A-group pace to a group for beginners.
The start and finish is our Burton End HQ near Stansted Airport. This is our 'hut' in a field behind 'The Ash' pub (as you look at the pub, you need to go down the track on the right hand side). Location here: https://bit.ly/330fyc2
If you don't have a car, it should be easy enough to arrange a lift with someone. Or if you prefer to get a train, the 8:22 from Tottenham Hale gets to Bishops Stortford at 8:49, and the 8:52 gets in at 9:15.
The event is free to enter, but we expect most people to pay a fiver for food. Tea/coffee and cake will be available at the start and then Frida will be cooking up some kind of chilli or curry (with a vegetarian option) for everyone to tuck into post-ride at about 1pm.
You can ride alone or in a group - it's up to you. Your departure time will be logged and we will see when you make it back and how close that is to your target.
Elite Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30471362
Approx 100km with a target time of 3 hours 15 minutes. Suggested departure time: 9:15am.B Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30471391
Approx 76km with a target time of 2 hours 45 minutes. Suggested departure time: 9:40am.C Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30471432
57km with a target time of 2 hours 30 minutes. Suggested departure time: 9:50am.Easy Riders Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30471459
Approx 32km with a target time of 2 hours. Suggested departure time: 10:00am.One extra rule: you need to take a selfie! The elite riders will need on outside The Fox in Finchingfield, and the other three groups will need to get one at the Guild Hall in Thaxted.
Frida will need to know how many to cater for by Friday 18th October, so please get your free 'ticket' online here before then: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lea-valley-cc-tourist-trial-gordon-attwell-tickets-75606305495

UPDATES:
The cafe that we were expecting to go to in Brasted will be closed, so we're intending to go to the Landemare Cafe at Chartwell instead. This makes the route about 3 miles longer in total and involves a little detour after Brasted before rejoining the original route near Ide Hill. I've edited the route to put this detour in:
https://www.strava.com/routes/15017195Also, there are now three groups, not two, each with different departure times:
A group: leaving from the town hall at 8am, riding fast ("B+ pace") and doing a 100-mile route which is largely the same as the others, but once down in Sussex diverts away from Herstmonceux and instead heads further west to take in Beachy Head and Eastbourne before rejoining the route as we head east along the coast: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30917819
Social: leaving at 8:30am and going at relatively gentle pace (13-14mph)
B group: leaving at 9:00am and going at a moderate pace (16-17mph)

The August Bank Holiday is coming up which means it's time for John Summerhayes's annual lengthy club ride known as the 'Summer Saunter'. This year it will be heading down to Hastings on the south coast on Sunday 25th August. Here is the intended route for everyone to download: https://www.strava.com/routes/15017195
This is the route we tried last year, but had to abandon halfway due to torrential rain. This year we might have two groups, with the faster group setting off a bit later (see schedules below).
John says:
"Meet at Waltham Forest Town Hall at 8:30 am. Proceed though Wanstead, Forest Gate, East Ham and Becton then cross the river at the Woolwich Foot Tunnel. Slight climb over Shooters Hill then down to Eltham, onto Chislehurst and Orpington. Once south of the Thames the route is very open and green. At 20 miles London is now behind us. Onto Downe and then a 25% climb up to Cudham. We then drop down to Brasted for coffee and cakes etc. Estimated time of arrival around 11:00-11:15.
With more climbing we head towards Chartwell then Ide hill, then it's downhill to Bough Beech. Afterwards we head to Chiddingstone, Fordcombe, Stone Cross, Groombridge, Eridge Station, Marks Cross and Rotherfield. This part of the route is undulating. We then climb up to Mayfield (with a stop for refreshments) then downhill to Heathfield and Cade St. Then on to Herstmonceux Castle. After this it's a flat ride across Pevensey Levels to Pevensey and still a flat coastal ride to Bexhill. The very last leg is a ride along the beech cycle path to Hastings. We then head to the Station to book the journey home. In the past it's been a special price of £10 each for a family of 4. Or as some are already doing you can book a B&B for the night and storm back the next day, as it's the Bank Hols.
The last and most important item on the agenda is to find a good place to eat. With good food in comfortable surroundings with safe parking for the bikes. We all settled for Wetherspoons last time.
I hope to see you on the ride."Here is an approximate schedule for the normal 'sauntering' group going at a fairly leisurely pace (averaging about 14mph / 22-23kmh, once out of London):
Meet at 8:30am at the town hall. Depart by 8:40am, cross the Thames around 9:30, stop at Brasted from 11:00-12:00 (possibly here?), get to Mayfield by 2pm, leave again at 2:30pm, be at Herstmonceux Castle around 3:45pm and Hastings by 5:30pm.There is talk of a possible second group going at a faster pace (aiming for 17mph / 27kmh) and setting off a bit later. A possible schedule for this could be:
Meet at 9:00am at the town hall and depart by 9:10. Cross the Thames around 10:00, stop at Brasted from 11:30-12:15, stop at Mayfield 1:45-2:15, be at Herstmonceux Castle around 3:15pm and Hastings by 4:30pm.Here are some possible direct trains:
16:50 (gets to London Bridge at 18:25)
17:31 (gets to London Bridge at 18:55)
17:50 (gets to London Bridge at 19:25)
18:31 (gets to London Bridge at 19:56)
18:50 (gets to London Bridge at 20:25)
19:50 (gets to London Bridge at 21:25)Tickets cost between £10 and £14 and John says it should be possible to get group tickets for groups of four at £10 per person.
John would like to know ASAP roughly how many people are intending to ride, so if you are planning to come please email him at irongate@talktalk.net -
For a while, some routes were being posted in this thread so there are some more to look at there, but that thread also hasn't been used for quite some time.
Someone started a Lea Valley group on ridewithgps a couple of years ago or so and there are more routes there. There are also various routes which were made on Strava, which obviously won't be in the ridewithgps group, and lots of routes which were only posted to Facebook. It will take quite a while to get them all together (and to edit any which don't go via High Beach), but ultimately it should be possible to have a page on the website with lots of routes on.
-
Bump!
Some of us were talking last week about trying to get together a depository of various routes for rides so that whoever is choosing the club run route on any given week has easy access to a range of routes to choose from. I had a vague ghost of a memory that we had already done this before, and after some digging around I've found this neglected thread which hasn't been touched for over 3 years.
Unfortunately, most (or maybe all) of the routes here would need to be updated as things have changed a bit in the last few years. It used to be that the 'fast group' (in the days before A/B/C/Social) didn't go via High Beach, but now all groups do (for the second pick up), so the routes would need go that way.

I have looked at Monika's data from the 2013 version of the Summer Saunter which also went to Hastings with Monika's average speed approximately 13mph. They set off from the town hall at 9:10, crossed the foot tunnel at Woolwich between 9:50 and 10:10, got to Brasted at 12:05 (having taken a longer route out of Orpington than is intended this year), stopped for refreshments and left again at 1pm, had a 25-minute stop north of Chiddingstone, presumably for a mechanical, then there seemed to be an off road section near Crowborough where I can only assume everyone got lost for a bit (!) and eventually arrived at Mayfield at 4:10pm for more refreshments. Set off again at 4:30pm, got to Herstmonceux Castle by about 6pm and finally t0 Hastings Pier by 7:30pm and then a train at about 8:20pm.If we are meeting at 8:30am this time, then a resasonable schedule could be as follows:
Depart by 8:40am, cross the Thames around 9:30, stop at Brasted from 11:30-12:30, get to Mayfield by 3pm (assuming no mechanicals and as this route avoids the confusion near Crowborough), leave again at 3:30, be at Herstmonceux Castle around 5pm and Hastings by 6:30pm.Here are some possible direct trains:
18:50 (gets to Charing Cross at 20:48)
19:19 (gets to Victoria at 21:28)
19:50 (gets to Charing Cross at 21:48)
20:22 (gets to Victoria at 22:28)Tickets cost between £10 and £14 and John says it should be possible to get group tickets for groups of four at £10 per person.

It's a bit complicated this week, so read carefully! Our annual road race is coming up in 2 weeks' time and various newer members of the club are either racing in it for the first time or will be in the convoy or marshalling the event...SO...there will be a club run tomorrow (Sunday 17th June) which will head up to the road race circuit and do a loop of it so that everyone is familiar with it. Not everyone will be doing this, so keep reading if you don't want to go that far.
We might have enough people for a separate B group (possibly led by James M) and C group (possibly led by Karl B) riding up to the road race circuit. This is the route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/14368103
We have used this twice before to recce the circuit for the 2016 and 2017 races (which both got cancelled, but that's another story). It goes up via High Beach, but not via Mott Street, so if you're joining these groups you need to be at High Beach by 9:30am. The B/C groups should reach Thaxted between 11:00 and 11:30 where I will join them (I'm coming back from injury and can't ride far yet, so will be driving up) and Radwinter by 11:20-12:00 to start one lap of the road race circuit. Once that loop is completed, it's off to Saffron Walden to visit the Bicicletta Velo Cafe: https://www.biciclettavelo.com/menu They serve coffee and cakes and also hot food, but normally stop serving the latter at 1pm. We are likely to arrive between 12:45 and 13:30, so possibly too late for hot food, but I have contacted them to ask if they can keep serving for a little bit longer.
After the cafe there are two possibilities. Some will be getting the train home from the nearby 'Audley End' station (which is in a village called Wendens Ambo a couple of miles west of Saffron Walden). There are two trains an hour back to Tottenham Hale / Liverpool Street taking approx 45-60 mins. The ticket price is about £12 but we did manage to get group discounts in the past. Others are riding back again via a more direct route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27807781
So that's about 64 miles if you get the train or 104 miles if you ride back again.
Meanwhile, not everyone is up for such a long ride. Alex should be leading a B-ish group of riders who will shadow the above ride as far as Takeley and then branch off and start heading home again for a total ride of 65 miles:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27804195
Last, but not least, if none of these take your fancy there should be the usual Social ride led by John who will announce his route on the day. They will be going via High Beach as usual and having a second pick up there at 9:45 (i.e. later than the faster groups).
ALL GROUPS STARTING FROM THE TOWN HALL ON FOREST ROAD AT 9:00AM AS USUAL
If you are new to the club and intending to join us for the first time, have a read of the FAQs: http://leavalleycc.co.uk/club-rides/
We welcome people to come and join us to see what the club is all about, but we do ask people to become members of the club after their third ride with us. See you tomorrow.

Karl has been working on totally revamping the club's website and as part of this he has diligently copied across all of the tumblr blogs I wrote from 2013-2017. The idea is that we will host all of them there in the future.
Instead of just reporting on our latest races and club runs (which can get a bit repetitive after a while!), I've been intending to add some different features to the blogs. I'm hoping to be able to interview some of the people who have been in the club for decades to find out about how the club has developed and also their own cycling stories through the years.
I'm out of action with an injury so I've had a lot of time on my hands recently. I couldn't interview anyone, so I decided to kickstart these retrospective features by telling my own story of how I first got into cycling as a teenager (before completely abandoning the sport for many years). This is the result:

I'm looking to do some rides further afield this year, to explore some roads I haven't been on before, but still close enough that it could be done as a reasonable day trip. I bought a book called 'Lost Lanes' (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Lanes-Glorious-Southern-South-East/dp/0957157312 ) for inspiration. It's got 30-odd routes around the south-east of England, but is more geared up for people going at a leisurely pace and not necessarily on a lightweight road bike: many of the rides are under 30 miles long and feature off-road sections. Also, the rides tend to start and finish at railway stations, but I think it's probably easier and cheaper to drive (as otherwise you'd have to ride to/from Paddington or Waterloo or wherever before and after the train journeys to/from the actual ride). So I've used the some of the rides in the book as a starting point, but re-routed and elongated them and often chosen a more suitable starting point. The idea is that all of them should be less than a two-hour drive away.
These are the routes I've got:
Kent/Sussex - 55 miles to/from Shadoxhurst (near Ashford), 1 hr 20 min drive down the M20, mostly flat, heading through Romney marshes, to the coast in the shingle wilderness of Dungeness, and passing through Rye. You could get a very fast train from Stratford to Ashford, but it's pricey. https://www.strava.com/routes/12125522West Sussex South Downs - 53 miles to/from Blackdown (near Haslemere), heaths, woods, hills, probably covering some of the route of the Velo South event (I haven't actually checked) the route fiendishly finishes with a climb to the highest point in Sussex. You could get a train to Haslemere from Waterloo / 1 hour 30 min drive down the A3 https://www.strava.com/routes/12125751
Hampshire - 40 miles to/from Easton (near Winchester), similar to the ride above but further west, 1 hr 40 mins down the M3 or train to Winchester from Waterloo. https://www.strava.com/routes/12125860
Thames Valley / The Chilterns - 48 miles to/from Stokenchurch (near High Wycombe), about 1 hr 10 mins up the M40 or train to HW from Marylebone. A ride of two very different parts: one hilly and the other flat. https://www.strava.com/routes/12130354
The Cotswolds - 64 miles to/from Combe (middle of nowhere beyond Oxford, quite near Blenheim). Nearly 2 hours' drive up the M40 / train from Paddington to Hanborough. A bit of a trek this one, but taking in loads of the famous places in the Cotswolds such as Burford, Lower Slaughter, Bourton-on-the-Water. Quite a bit of climbing. https://www.strava.com/routes/12131523
Herts / Chilterns - 47 miles to from Watton-at-Stone (near Hertford / Welwyn Garden City). This is the closest one, just 45 mins' drive up the A10 or a short train journey from Finsbury Park to Knebworth (or from Tottenham Hale to Hertford East). Gets quite hilly in places. https://www.strava.com/routes/12131733
Suffolk - 68 miles to/from Grundisburgh (beyond Ipswich). About 1 hr 40 min drive up the A12 or get the train from Liverpool Street to Ipswich. A long ride, but fairly flat, taking in the Suffolk countryside and then heading to the coast at Dunwich and Aldeburgh. https://www.strava.com/routes/12132818
I won't be doing any of these until the weather gets better, but hopefully will do approx one a month from April through to September. I'm happy to do them solo, but if there's interest in doing a B/C group pace club ride with various people driving, I'd be up for that.
-
Roland and (currently) 5 others are planning to do a 100-miler tomorrow, heading out to the Blue Egg cafe (near Great Bardfield), having a coffee, and zooming back home again. The idea is to have a pace of 18-19mph, leaving as close to 9am as possible, and hopefully back again around 3:00-3:30pm. Because they've got a long way to go they WON'T be going via High Beach. There is no second pick up, but if it's awkward for you to get to the town hall you could wait en route at either The Castle (be there by 9:05) or somewhere on the Epping New Road. Here is the route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26760853
I'm going to try to follow them as far as Hatfield Broad Oak, though with my winter level of fitness and on my heavy winter bike, this may prove to be a short-lived attempt. I'm not doing 100 miles, but I've got a route that follows the above for the first 23 miles, then turns round to go home via Hatfield Heath (where there is a cafe or shops). I would expect to be aiming for 17mph overall, though given the circumstances, this might mean 18 on the way out and 16 on the way back. As I am copying their route for the outbound leg, I also won't be going via High Beach. I don't expect to be riding solo (but who knows?!) so should be leading some kind of ill-defined breakaway B/C group. My route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26777835
I suspect there will also be another C group who may well be calling through High Beach and a Social Group as well, but don't have details. If you're doing either of these, please comment below or on Facebook.
Club Run FAQs: https://leavalleycc.tumblr.com/post/158561646193/lea-valley-cc-club-runs-faqs
Edit: Karl says he'll take a C-group via High Beach, using this route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26778042
(which is different, but also stops at Hatfield Heath so there's a chance we would meet up) -
We've got a couple of routes for tomorrow. I'm planning to do 48 miles with a cafe stop in Blackmore following this one:
https://www.strava.com/routes/8017947
Various others want to go a bit further and will use this 60 mile route which is essentially the same, but branches off at Ongar to do an extra 12 mile section (but still returns the same way via Blackmore):
https://www.strava.com/routes/11563718
This is a mixture of A group, B group and C group people - we'll work out exactly who's going at what pace tomorrow (my inclination at this time of year is to ride slower than I normally would!).I know that Edward is also leading a social / introductory ride, presumably over a shorter route.
The forecast is for 4C tomorrow morning, so cold, but hopefully not icy. If it is icy we'll need to change to a main roads route.
Meeting at the town hall at 9am as usual. FAQs: https://leavalleycc.tumblr.com/post/158561646193/lea-valley-cc-club-runs-faqs

Fancy a Christmas Eve ride? Tim and Roland are planning a longish one (approx 75 miles) using this route that heads out round Hanningfield Reservoir, presumably at B-group pace: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/13726268
I'm intending to do a shorter ride (approx 45 miles) that follows the same route for the first 17 miles, then branches off north through Stondon Massey and up through Ongar. Hopefully having a coffee stop at the pub in Moreton (26 miles) if they're open early enough. Not planning on hammering it - I reckon a festive 16mph would be fine. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26630620
There may be other groups doing other routes, but in case there aren't, please note that neither of the above routes are going via High Beach. We should be meeting as usual at the town hall on Forest Road at 9am and going past The Castle (Woodford) circa 9:10-9:15am (depending on how promptly we get going).
-
Several different plans for tomorrow. Alice is leading the women's group ride at a nice and easy pace, doing approximately 45 miles with a cafe stop at Blackmore. More details and route here: https://leavalleycc.microcosm.app/conversations/313401/
I am going to do a gentler ride than normal (shaking off a cold), probably at C group pace (16mph+), following this route which is just over 50 miles. We will overlap with a sportive for a few miles between Stondon Massey and Willingale and then again from Moreton down to Abridge so the roads will be busier than usual. I'm planning to stop for a coffee (and perhaps Belgian waffle) at the pub in Moreton, which is about 32 miles into the ride.
Both these groups will be meeting at the Town Hall at 9am as usual and both are calling at High Beach on the way out. I expect my group will be there around 9:30 and the women's ride perhaps 10 minutes later. I don't know if there will also a be a social group going as well - they would presumably also pick up around 9:40/9:45 from High Beach if they're out.
That's leaves tomorrow's fastest group. Roland and several others from the normal A and B groups are aiming for a long (>80 miles) ride, but still hoping to be back around 1pm, so they are heading out earlier than usual. If you fancy joining them (and bear in mind this will be ridden at a 'tempo' pace, i.e. NOT gentle, more like 19mph) they will be meeting at the Town Hall at 8am and then heading east for a second rendezvous at Forest Farm Shop opposite Fairlop Waters Golf Course at 8:30am. Their route is also likely to overlap with the sportive a bit.

Please see the attached invitation. Sunday 26th November at Wanstead Golf Club. Emma said that everyone needs to say what they have chosen from the menu when buying their ticket and also that we are collecting questions to be asked to guest speaker Michael Hutchinson (winner of about a gazillion national time trial championships, one time record holder at multiple distances, author of several great books, Cycling Weekly columnist and occasional cycling pundit on TV) who will doing a Q&A session.
Our annual club circuit race will be held on Sunday 3rd September using the lower circuit at Hog Hill (aka Redbridge Cycling Centre). Signing on from 10am and the race should start at 10:30am.
The usual format: the race should last for somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour. The first lap is The President's Lap and everyone has to ride (slowly) behind the club President. After that we have an unofficial neutralised 'truce' for the first 15 mins or so, where the bunch will go round at about 20mph so that people new to racing/riding in a bunch can get used to it and see what it's all about. Then there will be a prime (an intermediate sprint for a prize) and the gloves are off - the pace will go up and the bunch will get thinned out and/or split into smaller groups.
The event is run under TLI rules, so you need to become a 'day member' of TLI. Please print out the attached form, fill it in, and bring it with you on the day to save time. The entry fee is also payable on the day. Price is provisionally £12
