A slight change from the usual plan. New member Barnaby has organised a birthday ride with some of his mates starting and finishing in Highams Park:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/6042640
Some of us (I think me, Alex and Carsten at least) will be meeting them at The Castle in Woodford at 9am. I will go there via the Town Hall and pick up anyone that wants to come with us at around 8.45-8.50am.
The whole ride will be the best part of 70 miles and the aim is to be back before 1pm so the pace will be pretty high (18-19mph?) without any stops. -
Well, in the absence of some of our fastest riders we didn't manage to retain the trophy - that's gone to Shaftesbury this year - but we beat Eagle to second place in the team competition. Alex was the fastest Lea Valley rider, knocking a huge amount off his PB (8 minutes???). I was his minute man and he caught me between the Hinxton and Sawston roundabouts before disappearing up the road. I found the traffic quite problematic - not just having to grind to a halt at some of the roundabouts (which can't be helped, it's just the luck of the draw), but an idiot in Littlebury deliberately braking in front of me over and over while laughing with his mate and then speeding off at 60mph when I tried to come round him. Chris found the course a bit confusing and took a wrong turn somewhere so his time is a bit down on last year. Monika won the women's prize. She had the pressure of having the other woman start one minute behind her, so she was determined not to be caught - she needn't have worried because she beat her rival by a massive margin.
Lea Valley times:
Alex Sweeting 1:04:10
Jamie Fake 1:05:50
Mark Freeman 1:13:03
Monika Konieczna 1:13:08
Chris West 1:13:34
Dave McCarthy 1:18:24
Johannes Douglas 1:20:08
Armin Hersch 1:24:47 -
Here's a youtube clip of the sprint finish: http://youtu.be/63ZN8qRUsAI
You could be forgiven for thinking John Scarlett won on that evidence - if I was him, I'd certainly claim so -
Hi Martin. It's difficult to say. If you look at the average speed of the Tuesday evening rides, it's really nothing special - my computer says just 14.5mph for the last one. But obviously we get slowed down a bit by junctions and traffic as it's an urban route - it doesn't feel as slow as that! Once up in Chingford we go on a loop of about 4 miles - there are two climbs in quick succession and people tend to push it hard up those and we all get split up, but normally we stop to regroup before embarking on another lap.

This is our usual route for the Tuesday evening rides now that it's dark enough to need street lights: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5871646
We use an anti-clockwise loop which starts and finishes at the top of Friday Hill in Chingford. We normally manage three laps of this, with some sprinting up the twin 'peaks' of Sunset Avenue and College Gardens. -

The Len Cooper is the club's annual circuit race open to all members. The last few editions have been held at Hog Hill, but this year we will be using the brand new road circuit at the velopark in Stratford (where we held our Tuesday Tens time trials over the summer). The circuit is booked from 9am to 10am and we must be off promptly at the end of that time, so people need to get down there by 8.30am to sign on and get ready to start. Not all details are finalised yet, but we may have separate men's and women's races (depending on the numbers). This is a great event and a chance to pick up some silverware and/or get a taste of road racing. Here's a report from last season's event: http://leavalleycc.tumblr.com/post/66688130781/len-cooper-memorial-circuit-race-at-hog-hill-sunday

OK, the route:
First from the HQ to the start -
Turn right and head north on North Hall Road for about a mile till you come to a T-junction with the B1383. Turn right and continue heading north on B1383, up through the village Newport, towards a roundabout with the B1052. The start is just before this roundabout (i.e. south of it). Then the race itself -
Head north on the B1383, go past Audley End (stately home on the right), through the village of Littlebury (where the road bends to the right and then to the left), through the village of Great Chesterford (where the road does the same thing), up a long drag to Stump Cross roundabout. This should have marshalls. The first time you go there, you turn left on the B184 and then go straight over a series of three roundabouts in quick succession (these ones won't have marshalls). You are now heading north again on the A1301.
Next you come to the Sawston roundabout (which should also have marshalls). The first time you come here turn right (3rd exit) on the A505 and head north-east towards the A11. This is a busy and fast dual carriageway, but you don't really join it as such: you stay in the left hand lane all the time and your slip road which joins the A11 soon becomes a slip road immediately leaving the A11, taking you up to a big roundabout with the A1307 called 'Four Went Ways' (again, there will be marshalls here). You go right round this roundabout (4th exit) and start heading back where you came from. As before, stay in the left lane at all times and you've barely joined the A11 before you're on a slip road leaving it again and back onto the A505 heading south-west back towards the Sawston roundabout.
When you reach the Sawston roundabout (for the second time) you turn left and head south retracing your way over the series of unmarshalled roundabouts until you get to the Stump Cross roundabout (for the second time). This time you go straight over it (2nd exit) and head south-west on the B184 until you get to a roundabout just outside the village of Little Chesterford. Again, there should be a marshall here. Go right round it (4th exit) and head back where you came from all the way to Stump Cross yet again.
When you get to Stump Cross roundabout (for the third and final time!), turn left (1st exit) and retrace your route south on the B1383 down through Great Chesterford, Littlebury, past Audley End and down the hill to the finish line, just before (north of) the roundabout where you started from.Clear as mud? This is an individual time trial, but with a team competition. It is open to riders who belong to clubs in the '32nd Association' (i.e. clubs which are historically from East London and who have one of the 'huts' as their country retreat, near Ugley in Essex, 32 miles up the road from London to Cambridge) - in addition to Lea Valley this includes Eagle, Shaftesbury, Victoria and a few others. Each rider gets their individual time, of course, but in addition to this the five fastest times from each club are aggregated and the club with the quickest time wins the team prize. Last year, for the first time in decades, we won the team prize. Here's a report from last September: http://leavalleycc.tumblr.com/post/61241494183/len-waters-25-mile-open-tt-saturday-14-september-2013
The race HQ is our place near Ugley - full directions here: http://leavalleycc.microcosm.app/conversations/253853/#comment11781792
The route is a bit complicated (will post a description below), but there will be marshalls so you shouldn't go wrong.
The entry fee is £5 and you'll need to fill in a CTT entry form. You can download one here: http://www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/Forms (click on the first file on that page, you will only need to fill in the first page - the second page is for hill climbs or team time trials (where you race together)). Bring the entry form along to a club night on a Tuesday to hand it in or to get help filling it in.
First rider is off at 3pm, last rider should be finished well before 5pm.
Help us defend our title!

We have a number of time trials each year which use our race HQ as their... er....race HQ. To help people find it for the first time, here are some directions:
The race HQ is near the village of Ugley in Essex. If you're coming up by car go up the M11 to junction 8 (Bishops Stortford), then go north-west on the A120 for a mile or so, down a hill to a roundabout, then right to head north on the B1383 through Stansted Mountfitchet. Turn right at the Chequers pub down a windy country lane with the club huts near the T-junction at the bottom of the hill under the motorway bridge. Link to a map here:
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=552715&Y=229420&A=Y&Z=120
Alternatively you could catch a train from Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale (Elsenham is the nearest station). -

Sun 24th August (Bank holiday weekend) - the 'Summerhayes Summer Saunter', longer than usual club run led by John, heading east this year to the Essex coast at Mersea. Approx 60 miles to ride there, then either ride to Chelmsford and get a train, or ride all the way back again if you're fit enough. Leaving from the Town Hall at 8.30am and then again from High Beach at 9.05am.
Sun 7th September - the Len Cooper club circuit race - open to all club members, this should be held between 9am and 10am at the Lee Valley Velopark road circuit although we are still awaiting confirmation of the booking
Sat 13th September - the Len Waters 25-mile time trial - again, open to any club member. You need to fill in a CTT entry form and bring it to one of the next two club nights (or send it to Don). This is an individual event, but a team competition (against a handful of other local clubs): the times of the five fastest riders from each club are aggregated to find the fastest club. We are the defending champions so we want a good turnout again this year. The race HQ is the club hut near Ugley (near Stansted Airport) and the race is on a course which starts near Saffron Walden. Full details to follow.
Sun 28th September - the Cresent Open 30-mile time trial - this is an open event (i.e. riders from any club can enter). As above, the HQ is our hut near Ugley and then course passes near Saffron Walden and Sawston in northern Essex / southern Cambridgeshire. To enter you need to send a CTT entry form to the organiser (Mark Freeman) by 14th September.
A reminder - we put on 7 or more time trials each year (not counting the Tuesday Tens) and every club member is expected to marshall at least once a season. If you haven't done on yet, please get in touch to offer to help. Thanks.

Info from recent club e-mail:
"Club nights. Now that the Tuesday Tens are over for another year we are returning to St Gabriel’s Church Hall , Havant Road, E17. We meet there every Tuesday night between 8pm and 10 pm. It’s where we plan the club’s activities, share news , ideas for training and members announce their triumphs and occasionally their disasters. There’s a rota for club nights· 1st Tuesday of each month – Club kit night
· 2nd Tuesday--- Bike fitting, fixing and training
· 3rd Tuesday- Pub night- we can’t use the hall on that night, so we meet at the Hare and Hounds on the Lea Bridge Road instead. Members are there from 8pm see http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/92/9266/Hare_and_Hounds/Leyton
· 4th Tuesday-Roller night... bring your rollers or your turbo
We plan to hold the Tuesday evening rides again this autumn. These are faster paced rides leaving the town hall around 7.15 and back to St Gabriel’s by 8.45 . Look out on Facebook etc for details. "

Still a bit of daylight left for now, so we'll be heading up to Epping Forest again while it's still possible. Meet at 7.15pm at the Town Hall on Forest Road, then we've got this route which will feature a couple of climbs for those who want to push it (Mott Street and Claypit Hill) before finishing at the Hare & Hounds pub on the Lea Bridge Road where there will be a club night for the rest of the evening:
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5626209
Remember: even though it will be light when we meet, it's going to get dark so you'll need lights -
-
Tues 12th August: sunset is at 8.29pm. Here's a 24-mile route, starting and finishing at the Town Hall on Forest Road. There will be three climbs: Mott Street and Claypit Hill in Epping Forest and then Kings Head Hill in Chingford on the way back. The stronger riders will probably race each other up these, but we should regroup after each one.
Route: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5626250
Next week (Tues 19th August) is pub night and the sun is setting earlier (8.15pm) so I've planned a shorter route (about 20 miles) which finishes at the Hare & Hounds: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/5626209
-
These should be starting up again next week (pre-pub). While we still have another month or so left of light evenings, we'll probably make the most of it and head up to Epping Forest and get a bit of climbing in. This time last year we had a few goes of a route that was about 25 miles, up through Chingford to the forest via a descent of Daws Hill and a climb of Lippits, then either through Upshire or down to Theydon Bois and back via Abridge and Chigwell.
This is the base for various activities including the annual reunion in July and the Gordon Atwell Tourist Trial in October. It is right next to Stansted Airport. Head for the little village of Burton End and find a pub called 'The Ash'. There is a path that goes to the right of the pub and you cand find the hut in the field behind. See the arrow on this map: http://streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=553195&Y=223710&A=Y&Z=120
